A fire called"one of the worst we've
had for a long time"by Maplewood Fire
Marshal Al Schadt caused more than
$50,000 damage to the home of Lee W.
Borehardt, 2316 Case Ave., Sunday af-
\ternoon.
Schadt attributed the heavy loss to a
delay by the homeowner in contacting the
fire department."He tried to put the fire
out himself," the fire marshal said,
"before he called the fire department."
About 40 firefighters from East County
Line and Gladstone were on the scene for
over four hours,By the time they arrived
flames were shooting 20 to 30 feet in the
air, Schadt said. The firemen were
hampered by bitter cold and frozen hoze
lines.
Schadt said the fire started in the kit-
chen area of the home, but the actual
cause is still under investigation.
There were two injuries during the fire.
The first was to the homeowner, who
suffered burns around his eyes and hands
while trying to extinguish the fire himself.
Maplewood fireman Francis Casura was
also injured, knocked down by smoke
inhalation.
Schadt said Borehardt was sleeping
when the fire started.
