Ramsey County received approval for
its proposed improvement of McKnight
Road from the Maplewood City Council at
its Feb. 17 meeting. The 1977 im-
provements will affect McKnight Road
from 11th Avenue to I-694.
The improvement portion approved by
the city council involves the west half of
McKnight Road from Radatz to Beam
Avenue. Curb, gutter and a five foot
concrete sidewalk will be installed
primarily with county and state funds.
The Maplewood portion of the cost from
Radatz to Beam, which will be assessed
to the benefiting landowners,will be$4 a
front foot for the curb and gutter and$1.10
a front foot for the sidewalk.
The improvement for the entire portion
of the road will involve a complete
reconstruction of the existing road as well
as installation of a traffic signal at lith
Avenue and several more street lights.
During the public hearing, Councilman
Donald Wiegert asked Wayne Leonard,
design engineer for Ramsey County, to
keep in mind that some of the im-
provements would divert more traffic
through 11th Avenue from White Bear
Avenue. Wiegert noted the county's plan
to close the left turn entrance into the
Target store on McKnight Road would
practically necessitate a signal on White
Bear Avenue, "A lot of people will be
using 11th Avenue to get to Target from
White Bear Avenue," he said.
The improvements are expected to be
completed by the end of this year.
IN OTHER ACTION, the council ap-
proved an addendum for the Mailand
Road storm sewer improvement plan.
The addendum increases the area of land
involved in the installation of the storm
sewer and drainage basin.
Although the council directed staff to
begin the project, it did not approve the
assessment policy, as there was some
question from the affected property
owners who currently have natural
drainage in the area, as to whether they
should be assessed for another area's
drainage problems.
