Brandon Jermel Smith, 23, of St. Paul was released Friday pending further investigation into the death of Eduardo "Titi" Alberto Figueroa, police say. "We are still waiting for a final determination as to the manner and cause of death in this case and that becomes critical going forward," said Maplewood Police Chief Paul Schnell. "Once that is finalized, we will be able to proceed with requesting formal charges." Figueroa, 40, died early Wednesday after he was allegedly assaulted by two men at Freddy's Tiki Bar at 1820 Rice St. while attempting to protect his 18-year-old daughter, police say. His daughter, who was also assaulted, had reportedly gone to the bar to give her father a ride home. After refusing medical attention at the scene, Figueroa died when he returned to his home and was stricken. Smith was taken into custody later Wednesday after police found him in a car in the area of Rice Street and Hyacinth Avenue. At the time, police said they were still looking for another man along with a woman believed to be connected to the case. While police have had "some contact" with the other suspects since then, no one else has been arrested, Schnell said. "We are waiting at this stage of the game for the final medical examiner's ruling," he said. Funeral services for Figueroa will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 840 E. Sixth St. in St. Paul. Sarah Horner can be reached at 651-228-5539. Follow her at twitter.com/hornsarah.
