On April 21 , Mounds Park Academy pre -kindergarten through fourth-grade students explored the extensive rainwater
gardens surrounding the pond on the Larpenteur Avenue campus in theiron going quest to become "citizen scientists."
While some students toured and observed the area, others studied and analyzed slides of rainwater and participated in other
Earth Day activities.
In partnership with the Ramsey -Washington County Watershed District, upper school science students led by faculty member
Mitch Thompson designed and planted the rainwater gardens surrounding the pond more than 20 years ago. The entire area
continues to be managed and enhanced by students in grades five through 12. They are involved in the upkeep of the plants
and the elimination of invasive species, which is integrated into MPA's science curriculum.
The gardens capture runoff water thatwould otherwise rush into rain sewers, lakes and streams without any chance of being
cleansed, thus protecting the environment on Mounds Park Academy's 32 -acre campus in Maplewood and beyond.
