The boy's mother called police Saturday afternoon to report that the father had not returned the boy at the expected time. She had last seen her child on April 7 at 1:30 p.m. when he was picked up by this father. They were supposed to go to a friend's house but never arrived. Police say that Sheppard has recently talked about leaving with his son, and learned that his cell phone appears to be disconnected. Maplewood authorities contacted the media about the boy's status, and the non-custodial father reportedly called police and returned the boy to his home after learning investigators were looking for him. Maplewood Police will forward the case to the Ramsey County Attorney for potential charges. "We take these cases very seriously," said Lieutenant Kerry Crotty, who oversees the Investigations Unit. "When the non-custodial parent is supposed to take the child for a few hours and is instead gone for days, there is reason for concern. We're gladthe child is safely home," she added. The non-custodial father does not have legal custody or regularly scheduled visitations with the boy. He is reported to have ties to people in Marshall, Minnesota, Sheldon, Iowa and Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
