non-custodial dad is returned

A four-year-old Maplewod boy who was taken by his non-custodial father on Thursday
has been returned to his mother, police said.
The boy's father returned the boy early Monday after learning that Maplewood Police
were investigating him for violating a custody agreement, said Maplewood Police Chief
Paul Schnell.
The father, Daniel Sheppard, Sr., has not been arrested, but authorities continue to
investigate the circumstances surrounding the boy's disappearance and plan to present
the case to the Ramsey County Attorney's Office for review and possible charges, Schnell
said.
"When the non-custodial parent is supposed to take the child for a few hours and is
instead for days, there is reason for concern," said Lt. Kerry Croty, head of the police
department's Investigations Unit. "We're glad the child is home safely."
