The first was found March 26 at Four Seasons Park near Demont Avenue and Flandrau Street. A second was spotted Saturday about 30 feet from the first, according to Maplewood Police Chief Paul Schnell. Two more were located Monday morning near the 1600 block of County Road C. All of the devices had been lit but failed to detonate, Schnell said, adding police suspect the incidents are linked and are pursuing leads on possible suspects. "It certainly is concerning, obviously," Schnell said. "We approached and responded to each device using the bomb squad because of the potential danger they pose.... We just don't understand what would motivate somebody to engage in constructing these." Each device was made with plastic piping, an unidentified powder and a wick, Schnell said. "I wouldn't describe them as highly sophisticated but obviously someone took some time, because these devices do have to be constructed, and it's not like there was just one of them," Schnell said. He added that pipe bombs aren't known to cause "extreme damage" but said they can be harmful. Based on their locations, police do not believe the pipe bombs were intended to target a particular person or location, Schnell said. Anyone with information is asked to call Maplewood police at 911 or text the information to city staff at 847411. Callers are asked to type the word "Maplewood" and then their tip information. http://www.twincities.com/2014/04/01/maplewood-police-find-four-pipe-bombs/ 1 /1
