Maplewood police are investigating a spree of suspicious phone calls to area businesses.
In each instance, the caller reportedly identified himself as a police officer from the
Maplewood, St. Paul or Roseville police departments and often told the employee who
answered the phone he was a conducting a survey of area businesses as part of school
project, according to information provided by Maplewood police.
The caller went on to ask personal questions of the employee, such as her age, hair color
and type of dress.
Five calls are being investigated. In each case, a female employee answered the phone.
Once questioned by the employee, the caller reportedly hung up.
"The nature of the contact and number of similar incidents occurring at various unrelated
businesses is of concern," Maplewood Police Chief Paul Schnell said in a written statement.
"While we have no information to suggest that the caller represents a physical danger, the
content and focus of the calls is understandably troubling," he added.
Anyone who receives a similar call is asked to report the incident to law enforcement.
Anyone with information about the identity of the caller is asked to call Maplewood police at
651-767-0640.
