Leaders ofthe North High School Relay for Life team met with their state senator Feb. 24 to show support for cancer research
and prevention. The students showed Sen.Chuck Wiger how they are raising funds attheir school through food sales, door-
to-door campaigns and a silent auction, among other activities.
Last year, the North High School Relay for Life event raised nearly $60,000 to support cancer research and patient service
programs. The students also voiced their support for legislative proposals that would require the Minnesota Department of
Education to adopt new standards for physical education in schools.
Madilyn Rehr, a North High School senior and event chair for the event, said "We're grateful Sen. Wiger came to our school
to hear about Relay for Life activities in our community, and to discuss our support for better PE standards to help tackle
childhood obesity. It takes strong community engagement and better laws to have the best possible impact in the fight against
cancer."
Childhood obesity affects 22 percent of Minnesota high school juniors, according to the 2013 Minnesota Student Survey.
Excess body weight, poor diet and physical inactivity contribute to as many as one out of five cancer diagnoses.
