60 stories for 60 years
Submitted by admin on Wed, 02/24/2016 - 12:OOam
On Feb. 26, 2017, the city of Maplewood will be 60 years old. In anticipation of Maplewood's 60th anniversary, local history
buffs have teamed up to write one story each week for the 60 weeks leading up to the anniversary. They'll cover everything
from the St. Paul Ski Club and Keller Golf Course to the establishment of the city and its legendary ghosttown.
Of course, the city's history goes back much farther than 1957. So the stories will go farther back to explore intriguing or
important local people, places, and events.
Stories, along with archived photos, will be released each Thursday, beginning Jan. 7, 2016, on the city's Twitter and
Facebook feeds, along with Maplewood's #60Stories webpage.
Readers are encouraged to commit some of the more interesting snippets to memory, as Maplewood's anniversary festivities
in 2017 will include a History Trivia Contest, with prizes, based on these stories.
For those that don't use the Internet, a notebook with copies of the stories that have been released will be available for
reading on site at Maplewood City Hall, 1830 County Rd. B E., weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; at the Maplewood Nature
Center, 2659 E. Seventh St., Tuesday through Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; and the Maplewood Area Historical
Society, 2170 County Rd. D E., during open houses. The notebook collection will be updated at the beginning of each month.
This project is a made possible by the city of Maplewood, the Maplewood Heritage Preservation Commission, and the
Maplewood Area Historical Society. The stories are written by staff and members of these organizations.
