Maplewood Nature Center is a 40 -acre preserve operated by the City of Maplewood. The Visitor Center is located at 2659
East Seventh Street in Maplewood and is open Tuesday through Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. To register for a program,
go online to www.mapiewoodnaturecenter.com or call 651-249-2170; people can also drop in during open hours with credit
card, cash or check to register.

• Saturday, Oct. 10 from 9:30 a.m. to noon is "Fall Bird -Banding Day." Watch licensed biologists capture, band and release
wild birds at the nature center to learn about the birds' age, migration, and populations, especially ways to tell fall -migrating
warbler species from one another. If conditions allow, participants will take a short hike to the floating boardwalk and use
binoculars to observe birds. The activity is free; no registration is needed, and people are encouraged to bring cameras.
• On Saturday, Oct. 17 from 1-2:30 p.m., adults are invited to the nature center to observe native shrubs in their bright fall
colors. Find out which native shrubs provide multiple seasonal benefits from food and shelter for wildlife to fall color and
winter interest.
Master Gardener Jane Klein will lead this overview of the many choices of interesting shrubs for yards.
• Two "Halloween Hijinx Puppet Shows" are scheduled at the nature Center Wednesday, Oct. 28; one at 10 a.m. and one at
11 a.m. The presentation is best for ages 2-5 with an adult; small daycares are welcome.
Participants will enjoy a show, a singalong and an opportunity to make a bat mini -kite to take home. A snack will be served
and groups can stay on the grounds to hike and picnic if they like.
The cost is $5 per child; people must register by Tuesday, Oct. 27.
• On Thursday, Oct. 29 from 6-8 p.m., wildlife artist and Legacy grant recipient Lynette Power will demonstrate wildlife
sculpting with the bronze, ceramic and other media she uses. Participants will have a chance to work with air -fired clay. The
class is suitable for ages 12 and up; participants pay a $12 materials fee. Register by Friday, Oct. 23.
Kids will learn how to count between the lightning strike they see and the
thunder they hear to figure out how close the strike was. (submitted photo)
