The Ramsey -Washington Watershed District offers the following programs to learn more about nature stewardship:
• The community is invited to join the patrol—the invasive plant patrol—by learning about invasives from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Saturday, April 11 at the Maplewood Nature Center
2659 Seventh St. E, Maplewood.
Participants will sharpen plant identification skills with a hands-on plant lab; learn how to mark locations and send in a report
—having a smartphone or GPS unit along will be helpful. They'll be asked to choose a site to monitor throughout the season.
Participants are also asked to know how to find camera settings for their smartphones or GPS prior to class.
The free workshop is ideal for master naturalists and master gardeners, native plant enthusiasts and older teens and adults
who want to make a difference in their local ecosystems.
Register for this free training by April 8 by calling 651-249-2170 or check the Maplewood Nature Center website
atwww.maplewoodnaturecenter.com, clicking on the "register Here" button.
• Check out "Beautifully Sustainable Landscapes" at the Maplewood Library, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 16, at 3025
Southlawn Dr, Maplewood.
Celebrated local landscape designer and author Douglas Owens -Pike for an evening of conversation centered on his new
book, `Beautifully Sustainable." Doug's presentation will feature photos of gardens he has designed, installed and
maintained over his 25 years of following ecologically sound principles.
Attendees will find out how to design landscapes that succeed with the least care and reduce the need for irrigation.
Rainwater harvesting and rain garden design, as well as resources will be discussed as well.
Owens -Pike will explain why it is critical to move away from traditional horticultural varieties to attract a greater diversity of
birds, butterflies and other increasingly rare pollinators.
The presentation is free but people need to register, by contacting Deb Barnes, 651-792-7959, leaving a name, e-mail,
phone number and number of people attending by April 13. For more information about the event contact Sage Passi at 612-
598-9163.
• Is it possible to have a green lawn while conserving water? Find out at the "Green Grass and Smart Sprinkling" workshop,
from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 21 at Central Park, 8595 Central Park Place, Woodbury.
The City of Woodbury and East Metro Water will provide a free evening devoted to lawn care that keeps children, pets and
wildlife safe and protects water resources.
