Burg, making his third appearance in the state tournament,went home from the tournament with the highest finish of his career. His quarterfinal opponent,St. Michael-Albertville senior Donnie Leuer, put up more of a challenge, but Burg advanced with a 7-4 decision. In the semifinals, Burg squared off against St. Francisjunior Tony Struntz and the two battled through three periods without a winner emerging.Tied at 5-5 after regulation, Burg scored a takedown with 13 seconds left in overtime to advance to the championship match. Carlson and Burg engaged in a scoring-fest in the finals as the points came fast and furious for both competitors. In the end, Carlson took home the gold via a 23-15 major decision as the pair averaged more than six points per minute in the match. Burg qualified for state by going 3-0 and winning the 160-pound championship at the Section 3AAA tournament. He scored falls in his first two matches and beat Cretin-Derham Hall's Josh Goldberg 6-1 in the final. This was Burg's third trip to the state tournament. He went 0-1 at 145 pounds as a sophomore;then was 2-2 at 152 pounds as a junior,and 3-1 this year as a senior. That gives him a career state-tournament record of 5-4.Throw in his matches as part of the team tournament in 2014 and Burg is 6-5. Burg capped his senior season with a record of 37-4. North The Polars' Louie Varland also made a state appearance in this his senior season.Varland,wrestling at 160 pounds, lost in the first round and that ended his tournament matches. Varland closes out his prep wrestling career as a three-time state qualifier. He went to state first as a freshman wrestling at 106 pounds.Two years later, he went back to state as a junior at 152 pounds.
