Senator Chuck Wiger, DFL -Maplewood — along with Representatives Leon Lillie, DFL -North St. Paul, and Peter Fischer,
DFL- Maplewood —succeeded in ensuring the Gateway Trail would remain user-friendly throughoutthe winter.
They asked the Department of Natural Resources to reverse its decision to not plow 12 miles of the Gateway Trail, which is
typically used by northeast metro residents year-round.
The DNR had initially announced it would not plow the trail due to budget constraints. After public officials and taxpayers
requested the decision be reversed, the DNR decided it will collaborate with local governments to coordinate plowing duties.
"I appreciate the DNR working with local governments to make sure trails are open for public use throughout the winter,"
Fischer said in a press release.
The three elected officials are undertaking efforts to hedge any future winter trail closures, listing North St. Paul, Stillwater,
Maplewood and the Grant Township as necessary partners.
"I look forward to working with the DNR in establishing a long-term solution so we don't run into this issue again," Wger said.
