Do you know how many different types of bees there are in Minnesota? Or how these fuzzy winged insects help put food on
our table?
It's a conversation local naturalists, researchers and politicians look forward to having with Minnesotans at the pollinator
policy forum on Thursday, Oct. 22. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. and will be hosted by Rep. Leon Lillie and moderated by
Rep. Rick Hansen at the Maplewood Community Center, 2100 White Bear Ave.
Due to changing agricultural practices and the widespread use of certain pesticides, combined with climate change and
habitat loss, pollinator populations are on the decline. And the work that they do — pollinating crops, trees and flowers —
simply can't be replaced.
Speakers will delve deeper into the issue and discuss what steps can be taken to help protect pollinators in Minnesota. The
guest pannel includes experts from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, the Minnesota Department of
Agriculture, the Minnesota Board of Water and Soil Resources, the Minnesota Zoo, the University of Minnesota, the
Maplewood Nature Center and local bee keepers.
The forum is free and open to the public.
