Fearful that her ex-boyfriend would make good on threats to kill her, a Mounds View woman
said she shot him in the chest while he assaulted her in her home.
Daniel Alden Carlson, 45, of Maplewood is charged with domestic assault and terroristic
threats for attacking the woman.
According to a criminal complaint, Carlson had a romantic relationship with a woman,
identified as A.L.J., whose basement he rented in Mounds View. Their relationship ended
and the woman this month asked Carlson to move out.
The complaint continued:
Carlson showed up at the woman°s home unexpectedly Sunday, knocked on the door and
demanded to talk to her. A.L.J. said she was scared and retrieved her handgun. She was in
her living room, talking to Carlson through the door, when she saw the lock turning. Carlson
entered, hit A.L.J. in the head and threatened to kill her, she reported.
"Believing Carlson was about to carry out his threat to 'kill' her, A.L.J. pulled out her loaded
gun and held it to his chest," the complaint said. When the assault didn't stop, she pulled the
trigger.
The assault eventually stopped and the woman called 911. Carlson was sitting outside the
home suffering from a non-life-threatening gunshot wound when police arrived.
He has a prior domestic-assault conviction.
