Thursday, July 9, 2015 Heritage Preservation Commission Meeting Minutes 7a MEMORANDUM TO: Heritage Preservation Commission FROM: HPC Education/Research Committee DATE: September 10, 2015 RE: Education Committee Introduction The Heritage Preservation Commission (HPC) set a 2015 goal of co Historical Society (MAHS) on developing educational materials. September meeting commissioners will discuss this project. Background In early 2015, the HPC appointed a committee to work with MAHS on education and/och related to Maplewood history. The committee was also asked to determine whether the project it identifies th might be used in conjunction with a celebration of Maplewoods 6 anniversary in 2017. Committee members include commissioners Boulay, Gilbertson, and staff member Gaynor, MAHS Executive Director DeGuzman, and MAHS President Jensen. The committee has met twice and proposes the project outlined below. Project Description: Develop 60 short pieces that help tell the story of Maplewoods history. Publish th one story each week during the months leading up to February 2017, the 60anniversary of Maplewood. In honor of the anniversary, the partners would host a History Trivia Evening based on the stories in the series. Project Goals: 1.Develop materials that tell the story of Maplewood. 2.Stimulate interest in history and preservation among Maplewood c Media: The project will use social media forums and traditional print forums. 1.Twitter A Throwback Thursday photo and on Twitter would initiate the launch of each story, directing people to the project webpage. 2.Web page The City and MAHS would have a webpage dedicated to this project with access to the stories. 3.Maplewood Living (the citys newsletter) could be used to generate interest in thseries potentially including a monthly trivia question. 4.City staff and MAHS would encourage the local paper to run some series. 5.Facebook Facebook postings could be used to generate interest and provide a forum for people to comment. 6.The materials could eventually become part of kiosk displays at Maplewood Mall, and Maplewood Library. 7a 7.MAHS or the City could host an event featuring readings of selected stories from the se. 8.A print version of the series could be a possibility at the end of the project. Topics: The stories would highlight important and/or intriguing aspects of Maplewood history, from prehistoric times to the present. Story Format: The stories would be brief one to three paragraphs and would ideally include a photo or drawing. Some of the stories may be videos. The Education Committee requests that each commissioner submits at the September 2015 HPC meeting. These topics will be considered for inclusio series. Were looking for the most important or the most interesting stories of Maplewood history. For the meeting, you just need to indicate the topic; there will not be time to tell the story. Recommendation The Committee recommends the Commission provides input on the project. The Committee requests that each commissioner provides five story topics for the series. No formal action is required. Attachments None
