A. CALL TO ORDER
A meeting of the Commission was held in the City Hall Council Chambers and was called to order
at 7:00 PM by Chairperson Dan ielson.

C. APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Item G1 - Public Official Conduct and the Open Meeting Law was removed from the agenda.
This item will be presented at the October 14th meeting, as some Commissioners were absent.
Commissioner Fortin moved to approve the agenda as amended.
Seconded by Commissioner Brandt Ayes - All

D. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
1.Approval of July 08, 2014 HRC Meeting Minutes
Commissioner Deeny moved to approve the July 8, 2014 HRC Minutes as submitted.
Seconded by Commissioner Fortin Ayes – Chairperson Danielson
Abstain – Commissioner Brandt
The motion passed
E. NEW BUSINESS
1.Human Rights in the News – Review/Update on Upcoming Forums/Reports on Forums or
Meetings Attended or Other Related HR Issues
Commissioner Deeny reported on the following designations the Minnesota Department of
Human Rights has made: September 15 through October 15 as Hispanic Heritage Month and the
month of October as Disability in Employment Awareness Month, in addition to the Living the
Legacy Youth Video Competition.

Commissioner Brandt gave a report on prohibition.
Chairperson Danielson gave an update on the City Council meeting he attended to discuss the
commission’s goals and direction.
F. UNFINISHED BUSINESS
1.Discussion of Goals for Upcoming Meetings
The commission discussed details for the Integrative Youth Development Program forum that will
be hosted at the Maplewood Community Center.
The commission decided to host another Student Contest and discussed details
Additional goals for future meetings were discussed.
G. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS / STAFF PRESENTATIONS
Commissioner Brandt commented on the event discussing Prohibition, held at the Maplewood
Community Center on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at 12:00pm.

Introduction:
Interim City Manager Melinda Coleman and I have been making a presentation on Public
Official Conduct and the Open Meeting Law to all of the City Commissions and Boards so that
all elected and appointed individuals are aware of the laws that govern your positions.
The following items will be covered in the presentation:

•Open Meeting Law
•Data Practices Act
•Public Hearings
•Social Media

SUBJECT: Discussion on Rescheduling the November 11, 2014 Human Rights Commission
Meeting
Summary:
As the November 11, 2014 HRC meeting is scheduled on the same date as the Veterans Day, a
legal holiday for which Maplewood City Hall is closed, this meeting must be rescheduled on a
date that a quorum is present. If a quorum cannot be obtained, the meeting must be cancelled.
Recommendation:
It is recommended that the commission set a date for this meeting to be rescheduled, or cancel
the meeting. Upon cancellation, the next scheduled meeting will be December 9, 2014.
