A. CALL TO ORDER
A meeting of the Commission was held in the City Hall Council Chambers and was called to order
at 7:00 p.m. by Commissioner Kringle.

C. APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Commissioner Kringle moved to approve the agenda as submitted.
Seconded by Commissioner Fortin Ayes - All
The motion passed.
D. AP P ROVAL OF MINUTES
1.Approval of the October 8, 2013 HRC Minutes
Commissioner Deeny recommended a change in spelling of her name, as appeared in the roll
call. The spelling was changed from “Sara” to “Sarah”.
Commissioner Danielson moved to approve the October 8, 2013 HRC Minutes as
submitted/amended.
Seconded by Commissioner Kringle Ayes – All
The motion passed.
E. NEW BUSINESS
1.2013 Student Essay Contest Awards Ceremony
Commissioner Danielson introduced the student essay contest winners: Julian Yang (3rd place),
Jaitel Vang (2nd place), and Nathaniel Kong (1st place). Each contest winner presented their
essay to the audience.

2. Human Rights in the News – Review/Update on Upcoming Forums/Reports on Forums or
Meetings Attended or Other Related HR Issues (This item is on the agenda to give the
Commissioners an opportunity to announce upcoming meetings or give a report on
meetings or forums that they have attended)
Chairperson Brandt commented on the death of Nelson Mandela and the impact he, and other
civil rights leader, had on history.
Commissioner Deeny commented on a recent virtual panel presentation that was held during
Human Rights Week (December 5th – December 15th) which discussed strategic advantages of
hiring people with disabilities.
Commissioner Deeny also commented on Ban the Box Law going into effect January 1st,
employers can’t ask prospective employees if they’ve been convicted of a felony in the past.

H. VISITOR PRESENTATIONS
Dee Yang of Oakdale, MN thanked the Commission and commented on the positive impact the
Human Rights Essay contest has for the students involved.

SUBJECT: Presentation on Communitas Twin Cities – Dianna McCartan
Introduction:
Communitas Twin Cities is a mission community located in Maplewood, MN. Their vision is to
be an expression of the Church that is relevant in their lives, and of those they serve. A special
passion exists to serve in the arenas of poverty, hunger, and homelessness and work with a
variety of organizations in the Twin Cities who care about these issues.
Pastor Dianna McCartan is present to provide the Commission with more information
on Communitas Twin Cities and its role in the Community
