Call to Order A meeting of the Commission was held in the City Hall Council Chambers and was called to order at 7:03 p.m. by Chairperson Brandt . B. Roll Call Jon Brandt, Chairperson Present Commissioners Nathan Danielson, Commissioner Present Sarah Deeny, Commissioner Present Yaya Diatta, Commissioner Absent Maurice Fortin, Commissioner Present Jeffrey Kringle, Commissioner Absent Julie Xiong, Commissioner Absent Staff Karen Guilfoile, City Clerk Present C. Approval of Agenda Chairperson Brandt added “Discussion of Future Commission Meetings” under New Business Chairperson Brandt added “Brief Review of 2013 Student Essay Contest” under Unfinished Business Commissioner Fortin moved to approve the agenda as amended. Seconded by Commissioner Danielson Ayes – All The motion passed. D. Approval of Minutes 1. Approval of September 10, 2013 HRC Minutes Chairperson Brandt pointed out a typo under item E2, which showed his name repeated twice. Commissioner Danielson moved to approve the September 10, 2013 HRC Minutes as amended. Seconded by Commissioner Deeny Ayes – Chairperson Brandt, Commissioner Danielson, Commissioner Deeny Abstain – Commissioner Fortin The motion passed E. New Business 1. Maplewood’s Karen Community – Presentation by Commissioner Nate Danielson and Saw Morrison of the Karen Organization of MN (No Report) Commissioner Danielson gave a brief introduction to the evening’s speaker, Saw Morrison of the Karen Organization of Minnesota. Saw Morrison gave a presentation on the Karen Community in Minnesota and his involvement with providing employment and social service aid; questions from the Commissioners were answered and discussed. Maplewood Police Officer, Paul Bartz discussed the interactions of the Police Department with the Karen Community and the outreach programs in place that assists in assimilation. 2. Human Rights in the News - Review/Update on Upcoming Forums/Report on Forums or Meetings Attended or Other Related HR Issues (This item is on the agenda to give the Commissioners an opportunity to announce upcoming meetings or give a report on meetings or forums that they have attended.) Chairperson Brandt commented on the current Federal Government shutdown and it’s relation to the Affordable Care Act. Chairperson Brandt proposed a topic for the November 2013 Commission meeting, ““Is HealthCare a Human Right for Americans” 3. Discussion on Future Commission Meetings The December 10th, 2013 meeting will be dedicated to the Student Essay Contest awards ceremony. Chairperson Brandt led a discussion on Commissioners preparing multiple discussion topics to bring to meetings to increase variety and create balance to the agenda. Staff Liaison, Karen Guilfoile proposed that the Commission sponsor outreach events and/or public forums to assist in creating organization and methods of support among the various communities in Maplewood. F. Unfinished Business 1. Brief Review of 2013 Student Essay Contest Commissioner Danielson gave a brief update on the 2013 Student Essay Contest. G. Commissioner Comments / Administrative Presentations 1. Discussion on November 12, 2013 HRC Agenda No discussion was held on this item as Staff Liaison, Karen Guilfoile indicated that the incident that warranted the discussion had resolved itself. H. Visitor Presentations None I. Adjournment Commissioner Danielson moved adjourned the meeting at 8:12pm Seconded by Commissioner Fortin Ayes - All The motion passed.
