CALL TO ORDER A meeting of the Commission was held in the City Hall Council Chambers and was called to order at 7:03 p.m. by Commissioner Deeny. B. ROLL CALL Jon Brandt, Chairperson Present Commissioners Nathan Danielson, Commissioner Present Sarah Deeny, Commissioner Present Yaya Diatta, Commissioner Present Maurice Fortin, Commissioner Absent Jeffrey Kringle, Commissioner Absent Julie Xiong, Commissioner Absent Staff Karen Guilfoile, City Clerk Absent Regan Beggs, Business License Specialist Present C. APPROVAL OF AGENDA D. APPROVAL OF MINUTES 1. Approval of the July 9, 2013 HRC Meeting Minutes Commissioner Deeny moved to approve the July 8, 2013 HRC Meeting Minutes as submitted. Seconded by Commissioner Diatta Ayes – Chairperson Brandt, Commissioner Deeny, Diatta Abstain – Commissioner Danielson The motion passed E. NEW BUSINESS 1. Student Essay Contest Discussion Commissioner Danielson gave an update on the Student Essay Contest. Entries will be submitted electronically, via e-mail to Karen Guilfoile by 5:00pm on November 29, 2013. The essay question is identical to the League of Minnesota Human Rights Commission 2013- 2014 essay topic, so students participating in the city contest can also participate in the state contest. The essay topic is: “Prejudice and stereotypes affect the way we perceive and interact with each other, even when we don’t realize it. How do stereotypes affect our society and how do they damage human rights?” September 09, 2013 Human Rights Commission Meeting Minutes 2 2. Human Rights in the News – Review/Update on Upcoming Forums/Reports on Forums or Meetings Attended or Other Related HR Issues (This item is on the agenda to give the Commissioners an opportunity to announce upcoming meetings or give a report on meetings or forums that they have attended) Chairperson Brandt, Commissioner Deeny, Diatta and Danielson spoke on and gave their opinions to the ongoing disturbance in Syria; Alan Kantrud, City Attorney also spoke on this topic F. UNFINISHED BUSINESS None G. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS / STAFF PRESENTATIONS Regan Beggs, Business License Specialist, spoke to remind the Commissioners of the Commissions, Board and Volunteer event held in their honor on September 26, 2013. Commissioner Danielson informed the Commission that the October 8, 2013 HRC Meeting will offer an educational open forum/discussion on the Karen community in Maplewood. A representative from the Karen Organization of Minnesota and the Maplewood Police Department will be present at this meeting, as well. H. VISITOR PRESENTATIONS None I. ADJOURNMENT Commissioner Deeny moved adjourned the meeting at 7:50p.m. Seconded by Commissioner Danielson The motion passed.
