CALL TO ORDER
A meeting of the Commission was held in the City Hall Council Chambers and was called to order
at 7:00 p.m. by Chairperson Fischer.

APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Commissioner Currie added a discussion regarding the Heritage Award under commission
presentations.
Commissioner Creager moved to approve the agenda as amended.
Seconded by Commissioner Currie. Ayes — All
The motion passed.
APPROVAL OF MINUTES
Commissioner Creager moved to approve the March 14, 2013, HPC minutes as submitted.
Seconded by Commissioner Currie.

NEW BUSINESS
a. Approval of the Ramsey County Fair Board's Plan to Improve the Barn Ventilation
i. Building Official, Dave Fisher gave the report.
Chairperson Boulay moved to approve the indoor fan and would like further information on the
exterior fan.

b. Early City Minutes 1957 to 1965
i. Building Official, Dave Fisher discussed the past minutes.
The commission decided they would like to do the minutes one at a time from 1957 to 1963.
CHAIR OPENING STATEMENTS /PRESENTATIONS — MAPLEWOOD BOWL
Chairperson Boulay stated the Maplewood Bowl has closed and more information will follow as it
develops regarding the future of the site.
VISITOR PRESENTATIONS
a. Anne Fosburgh & Anthony Yocum
Maplewood Resident, Anne Fosburgh thanked the commission for her nomination of the Heritage
Award that she won. Anne shared many stories and dates with the commission and said she has
two closets full of photo albums which she shares during events at the Bruentrup Farm. The city,
the Heritage Preservation Commission and the Maplewood Historical Society appreciate Anne's
hard work and dedication to preserving the history of Maplewood.
Business Owner, Tony Yocum IV, addressed the commission and shared a power point display
and discussed how his father founded Yocum Oil. He also gave the family history and discussed
businesses that are owned by Yocum Oil. In 2009 Yocum Oil celebrated 50 years in business
and is still prosperous in 2013.
OLD BUSINESS
a. Grants — Discussion
The fast track legacy grant deadline is July 12, 2013. The Minnesota Historical Society is offering
a workshop on legacy grants in May and June that Commissioner Rudberg is considering
attending.
In January 2013, a motion was made to do a grant study for the Gladstone area but after having
meeting in February it was recommended not to limit it to the Gladstone area but to include the
whole city of Maplewood.
Commissioner Rudberg made a motion to amend the January 2013 HPC decision to do an
Historical Context study of the entire city of Maplewood and not limit it to must the Gladstone area.
Seconded by Commissioner Gaspar. Ayes - All
The motion passed.
Commissioner Rudberg would like the planning commission and the Maplewood Historical
Society to be on board with this process which she has spoken to Bob Jensen about.

b. Approval of the Bridge 6402 Interpretive Panel Sign (Bruce Vento Trail Highway 36 &
English)
i. Building Official, Dave Fisher gave the report on the Bridge 6402 sign and answered
questions of the commission.
Chairperson Boulay moved to approve the bridge 6402 interpretive panel sign at the Bruce Vento
Trail at Highway 36 and English. Making sure the date on the photo is correct as October 1926.
Seconded by Commissioner Rudberg. Ayes — All
The motion passed.
c. Approval of the Frost Ave Bridge Interpretive Panel Sign
i. Building Official, Dave Fisher gave the report on the Frost Avenue sign and answered
questions of the commission.
Chairperson Boulay moved to approve the Frost Avenue Bridge Interpretive Panel Sign along
with the changes needed in the map.
Seconded by Commissioner Creager. Ayes - All
The motion passed.
9. COMMISSION PRESENTATIONS
a. Heritage Award — Commissioner Currie discussed that the Heritage Award for Anne Fosburgh
and recognizing Lu Aurelius should have been under Awards and Presentations but Mayor
Rossbach pulled it from the consent agenda to do a separate acknowledgment. The
commission discussed that they would have appreciated being notified that it was going to be
on the city council agenda so the commission could have been present.
10. MAPLEWOOD AREA HISTORICAL SOCIETY
Bob Jensen, Maplewood Historical Society said there may be a quorum of the Heritage
Preservation Commission in attendance at the Maplewood Area Historical Society Spring Tea on
May 25, 2013. There may also be a quorum June 12, 2013, at 7 p.m. The Maplewood Area
Historical Society meetings are held at the Bruentrup Heritage Farm, 2170 County Road D,
Maplewood.
11. STAFF PRESENTATIONS
Dave Fisher stated the month of May is building safety month, just a reminder to check your
smoke detectors and your C.O. detectors.
The city is working on the CIP. Someone from the commission could contact Chuck AN at 651-
249 -2056 or email him to make sure something gets put in the CIP for the Heritage Preservation
Commission.
Staff has not heard anything from Forest Lawn Cemetery but will pass the information onto Ginny
Gaynor who will be taking over the HPC commission.
12. ADJOURNMENT
Chairperson Boulay adjourned the meeting at 9:36 p.m.
