CALL TO ORDER A meeting of the Commission was held in the City Hall Council Chambers and was called to order at 7:07 p.m. by Chairperson Brandt Commissioner Sarah Deeny took the Oath of Office, administered by Karen Guilfoile, Maplewood City Clerk. B. ROLL CALL Jon Brandt, Chairperson Present Commissioners Nathan Danielson, Commissioner Absent Sarah Deeny. Commissioner Present Yaya Diatta, Commissioner Present Maurice Fortin, Commissioner Absent Jeffrey Kringle, Commissioner Absent Julie Xiong, Commissioner Present Staff Karen Guilfoile, City Clerk C. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Chairperson Brandt added to the agenda, under New Business, “Introduction of Sarah Deeny to the Human Rights Commission” Commissioner Xiong moved to approve the agenda as amended. Seconded by Commissioner Diatta Ayes - All The motion passed. D. APPROVAL OF MINUTES 1. Approval of the June 11, 2013 HRC Minutes Commissioner Diatta moved to approve the June 11, 2013 HRC Minutes as submitted. Seconded by Chairperson Xiong Ayes – Chairperson Brandt Abstain– Commissioner Deeny The motion passed E. NEW BUSINESS 1. Introduction of Commissioner Sarah Deeny to the Human Rights Commission– No Report July 9, 2013 Human Rights Commission Meeting Minutes 2 Sarah Deeny introduced herself to the Committee and highlighted her reasons of interest in becoming a member of the Human Rights Commission. 2. Discussion on US Supreme Court Decisions on Civil Rights – No Report Each Commissioner gave a brief comment on recent Supreme Court Decisions 3. Discussion on the 2013 Student Essay Contest – No Report Chairperson Brandt proposed his recommended topic for the essay Contest: “It’s easy to see human rights violations in the past, how do we recognize human rights violations in our own times?” An ad hoc committee was established for the essay contest. Commissioner Danielson will chair the committee, Commissioner Xiong and Diatta will also participate. Once school starts the commission will move forward with the essay contest. 4. Human Rights in the News – Review/Update on Upcoming Forums/Reports on Forums or Meetings Attended or Other Related HR Issues (This item is on the agenda to give the Commsisioners an opportunity to announce upcoming meetings or give a report on meetings or forums that they have attended) Commissioner Diatta spoke on the human rights violations stemming from the unrest in Egypt. F. UNFINISHED BUSINESS None G. COMMISSIONER COMMENTS / STAFF PRESENTATIONS 1. Cancellation of August 13, 2013 HRC Meeting Karen Guilfoile announced the cancellation of the August 13, 2013 Human Rights Commission meeting due to the Municipal Primary Election that day; she encouraged the citizens of Maplewood to vote. The next Human Rights Commission meeting will be Tuesday, September 10, 2013. Chairperson Brandt commented on the success of the Gay Pride Festival and Parade in Minneapolis and the Maplewood Fourth of July celebration. H. VISITOR PRESENTATIONS I. ADJOURNMENT Julie Xiong moved to adjourn the meeting at 7:54 p.m. Seconded by Commissioner Deeny Ayes – All The motion passed.
