CITY OF MAPLEWOOD
HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION
7:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 10, 12, 2012
Council Chambers, Maplewood City Hall

1. CALL TO ORDER
A meeting of the Commission was held in the City Hall Council Chambers and was called to
order at 7:02 p.m. by Chairperson Brandt.
2. ROLL CALL
Jon Brandt, Chairperson Present
Nathan Danielson, Commissioner Present
Maurice Fortin , Commissioner Present
Jeffrey Kringle, Commissioner Present
Teresa Manzella, Commissioner Absent
Arianne Maxwell, Commissioner Present
Julie Xiong, Commissioner Present
City Clerk Guilfoile was also present.
3. APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Commissioner Kringle moved to approve the agenda as amended.
Seconded by Commissioner Danielson Ayes – All
The motion passed.
4. Approval of Minutes.
Commissioner Kringle moved to approve the minutes of May 8, 2012 as submitted.
Seconded by Commission Fortin Ayes – All
The motion passed.
Commissioner Danielson moved to approve the minutes of June 12, 2012 as submitted.
Seconded by Commission Fortin Ayes – All
The motion passed.
5. NEW BUSINESS
1. A Video on human Rights.
In preparation for the discussion on Human Rights and Civil Rights – Is There a
Difference?” a video on Human Rights was shown.
This item required no action.
2. Discussion on Human Rights and Civil Rights – Is There a Difference?
Commissioner Brandt narrated a slide presentation on “Human Rights and Civil Rights –
Is There a Difference?” Discussion was held and all Commissioners had input on what
their research and study showed them on human rights and civil rights.
This item required no action.
3. Review/Update on Upcoming Forums/Report on Forums or Meetings Attended or
Other Related HR Issues. (This item is on the agenda to give the Commissioners an
opportunity to announce upcoming meetings or give a report on meetings or forums that
they have attended.)
Commissioner Maxwell updated the Commission on several meetings and events that
she had attended since the last meeting.
Commissioner Xiong spoke about the Supreme Court ruling on Health Care Reform and
suggested that the Commission stay informed on this issue to see if it would be a good
topic for the Commission to consider in the future.
4. Islamic Education Classes
Commissioner Danielson indicated that he had a contact if the Commission would like to
conduct an Islamic Education Class. After discussion the Commission concluded that
since there was just recently a conference of this type offered at the Maplewood
Community Center they would consider it at another time.
5. HRC Future Agendas
Discussion was held regarding topics to be discussed at future Commission meetings.
After discussion, the Commission decided that the history of gay rights would be the
topic for the August meeting and that each one of the Commissioners would have input.
Future month’s topics and events were also discussed specifically conducting a student
essay contest with local schools.

8. STAFF PRESENTATIONS
1. City Clerk Guilfoile requested that the Commission meeting for August be changed to
Thursday, August 16, 2012 due to the Primary Election being held on August 14,
2012.
Commissioner Kringle moved to conduct the August meeting on August 16th.
Seconded by Commission Fortin Ayes – All
The motion passed
2. City Clerk Guilfoile requested that Commission members that are working on
securing speakers for the September 11th forum be firmed up and any other pertinent
information be provided to her by the August 1st deadline to ensure that the event
would be advertised in the Maplewood Monthly.
9. ADJOURNMENT
Kringle motioned to adjourn and it was seconded by Commissioner Danielson at 8:12
p.m.
