CITY OF MAPLEWOOD
HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION
7:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 8, 2012
Council Chambers, Maplewood City Hall

1. CALL TO ORDER
A meeting of the Commission was held in the City Hall Council Chambers and was called to
order at 7:00 p.m. by Chairperson Brandt.
2. ROLL CALL
Jon Brandt, Chairperson Present
Jeffrey Kringle, Commissioner Present
Arianne Maxwell, Commissioner Present
Marie Ridgeway, Commissioner Present
There are currently three Commission seats that are open.
City Clerk Guilfoile was also present.
3. APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Commissioner Kringle moved to approve the agenda as amended.
Seconded by Commissioner Ridgeway Ayes – All
The motion passed.
4. Approval of Minutes.
Commissioner Kringle moved to approve the minutes as submitted.
Seconded by Commission Ridgeway Ayes - All
5. NEW BUSINESS
1. Commissioner Kringle and Chairperson Brandt gave a brief review on the seminar that was held
at the Maplewood Community Center on March 29th regarding Understanding the People of
Somalia.
2. Discussion was held regarding the Voter ID Amendment. The Commission agreed that they
would sponsor an educational forum on the issue at the regularly scheduled Commission
meeting to be held on October 9, 2012.
Commissioners Brandt and Maxwell will be attending the May 14, 2012 city council meeting to
garner support from the city council on this effort.
3. Commission Chair Brandt gave an update on the public educational forums that will be held on
the marriage amendment ballot initiative. Staff liaison Guilfoile confirmed that dates have been
booked at the Maplewood Community Center for the forums to be held on September 11, 2012
and October 23, 2012.
Commissioner Brandt and Commissioner Maxwell will be presenting a report to the city council
at the May 14, 2012 council meeting requesting their input and direction on how involved the
Commission should be and to garner council support on conducting the forums.
Further discussion was held regarding establishing an ad hoc committee to assist with the
forums perhaps with other HRC’s in the metro area. Commissioner Maxwell noted that on May
24th at 6:00 p.m. she would be attending the Roseville HRC meeting to discuss possible
collaborative efforts with them.
