Adjournment – 8:00 p.m. MINUTES CITY OF MAPLEWOOD HUMAN RIGHTS COMMISSION 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 14, 2012 Council Chambers, Maplewood City Hall 1830 County Road B East 1. CALL TO ORDER A meeting of the Commission was held in the City Hall Council Chambers and was called to order at 7:01 p.m. by Chairperson Kringle. 2. ROLL CALL Commissioners Jon Brandt, Commissioner Present Jeffrey Kringle, Chairperson Present Arianne Maxwell, Commissioner Present Marie Ridgeway, Commissioner Present There are currently three Commission seats that are open. Staff Karen Guilfoile, City Clerk 3. APPROVAL OF AGENDA Commissioner Brandt moved to approve the agenda as amended. Seconded by Commissioner Ridgeway Ayes – All The motion passed. 4. Approval of Minutes. Commissioner Ridgeway moved to approve the minutes as submitted. Seconded by Commission Brandt Ayes - All 5. NEW BUSINESS 1. Commissioner Kringle moved to appoint Commissioner Brandt as the Chair of the Commission for 2012. Seconded by Commissioner Maxwell Ayes - All Commissioner Brandt moved to appoint Commissioner Kringle as the Co-Chair of the Commission for 2012. Seconded by Commissioner Maxwell Ayes - All 2. Discussion was held regarding the 2012 Marriage Amendment. Staff will invite City Council liaison Llanas to attend the next meeting to discuss the issue. 6. UNFINISHED BUSINESS None. 7. The Shoreview Human Rights Commission will co-sponsor a Community Dialogue Series on Elder Abuse with the Roseville Human Rights Commission. The first session will be held on Monday, March 19, and will focus on “Why Seniors Get Swindled and How to Shut the Door on Scammers.” The second session will be on Monday, April 23 , and will focus on “Reporting Elder Abuse and Understanding What Happens Next.” The purpose of this event is to engage participants in a dialogue that discusses the types of elder abuse, how to prevent elder abuse and caring for the elderly. A small panel of experts will share their findings and how to prevent elder abuse and how to report it. With more than 450,000 new cases of elder abuse reported in the U.S. annually, this series is designed for everyone , including the elderly, caretakers and family members. All are invited and light refreshments will be served. The dialogue is scheduled both days from 3-5 p.m. in the Shoreview Community Center. Both sessions are free, but reservations are required.
