ADJOURNMENT CounciVManager's Workshop 3 -11 -02 AGENDAMU N0 l MEMORANDUM Action by Council Date Endorsed TO: City Manager Modified FROM: Assistant City Manager K(/ Rejected SUBJECT: Proposal to purchase Fire Station at 1900 Clarence Street DATE: April 1, 2002 INFORMATION Doug Carlson who owns the dental lab to the east of the Fire Station would like to purchase the Fire Station or enter into a lease for additional parking spaces. (See attached location map). Mr. Carlson would like to expand his business but needs additional parking. He is planning a small expansion and would like to bring in 20 additional employees. I have spoken with Mr. Carlson and he asked that I approach the City Council about the plans for the station. Staff would like to help Mr. Carlson stay and expand his business but he needs to know where the council stands on the issue of disposition of the property. When I talked to Mr. Carlson he indicated that he is not interested in relocating to a different site in the city as he has made a substantial investment in specialized equipment that would be expensive and difficult to move. Currently, the fire station is being used for storage purposes by the public works department. Mr. Carlson stated that he would be willing to purchase the building and lease out the space to the city until the public works department builds their new facility. Another option would be for the city to lease parking spaces to Mr. Carlson until we are ready to sell the building. Mr. Carlson has indicated that he would not be able to use the building for his business but he would be interested in purchasing it for future expansion purposes. REQUESTED ACTION Staff is requesting council guidance as to how to proceed with Mr. Carlson. If the Council is interested in working with Mr. Carlson staff would bring it back for formal action at a future Council meeting.
