Business & Economic Development Commission b. Planning Commission DATE: November 30, 2010 INTRODUCTION /SUMMARY The City Council will be continuing interviews of candidates for the Planning Commission and Business & Economic Development Commission (BEDC). These interviews are continued from the November 22 and 29 workshops. There are a total of seven (7) openings; 3 on the BEDC, 3 on the Planning Commission and 1 on the PCSC. The openings on the BEDC were created by current commissioners resigning; therefore the individuals assigned to fill these vacancies will be assigned the remaining terms. The openings on the Planning Commission were created by terms expiring at the end of the year. There was not sufficient amount of time to interview all of the applicants during the during the work session on November 22 and two candidates were unable to appear during the interviews on the 29th. The commissions have compiled a list of suggested questions to the Council to use during the interview process. There is a set of questions for new applicants and for a separate set of questions for applicants seeking reappointment. Two of the applicants for the Planning Commission are seeking reappointment, the rest of the applicants are seeking new appointments. Applicants seeking reappointment are given a shorter interview time as reappointment interviews typically go quicker because the applicant is more familiar with the process. Questions for the interviews will be provided to the Council under separate cover. RECOMMENDATION It is recommended that the City Council conduct interviews of the following applicants listed below for consideration for appointment to an open position on a board or commission. Being a younger member of the Commission, I bring a different point of view on Issues. Maplewood make the most sound firvancial decisions possible as It relates to development and redevelopment. Icy experience as a Police Officer for the City of Maplewood affords me a unique perspective on the needs of the police department and the community. Making certain that the citizens in the City receive the best' service m the police department. Reviewing budget considerations to make certain the citizens receive the best 'bang for their buck" from existing services as well as proposed programs. 6. Involvement with Trinity Mission in Saint Paul, an organization that assists "Working r" with food, clothing and other assistance. As stated previously, I feet I have a good, perspective on the needs of the police department and the citizens of Maplewood. I have lived within the city for over 30 years. Obviously, i am very familiar with city policies and procedures, and being refired, I have the time to devote to the commission.
