MINUTES OF THE MAPLEWOOD HERITAGE PRESERVATION COMMISSION
1830 COUNTY ROAD BEAST, MAPLEWOOD, MINNESOTA
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10, 2011
1. CALL TO ORDER
A meeting of the Commission was held in the City Hall Council Chambers and was called to order
at 7:00 p.m. by Acting Chairperson Currie.

3. APPROVAL OF AGENDA
Commissioner Aurelius added 8. b. New Business to discuss December HPC Meeting.
Acting Chairperson Currie added 7. c. Old Business to discuss Parkside Fire Building. Acting
Chairperson Currie had a correction to the bottom of the agenda in the paragraph it should say
December 14, 2011, at ~p.m. not 7- p.m. Also adding on December 10th there is a holiday open
house there from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Staff added a new 11. Staff Presentations to discuss Construction over pass (MN DOT)
Commissioner Aurelius moved to approve the aqenda as amended.
Seconded by Commissioner Currie.
Ayes - All
The motion passed.
4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
During the approval of minutes for September 8, 2011, Commissioner's Aurelius and Creager
commented that they were listed as abstaining from the approval of minutes but that was for the
August 11, 2011, meeting and the record indicated that they were absent from that meeting
therefore they cannot approve minutes that they were not present at the meeting for. The minutes
should be approved as submitted and no correction to the minutes is needed.
Commissioner Aurelius moved to approve the September 8. 2011. minutes as submitted.
Seconded by Acting Chairperson.
Ayes - All
The motion passed.

5. CHAIR OPENING STATEMENTS/PRESENTATIONS
None.
6. VISITOR PRESENTATIONS
a. Guest Speaker - Bill Bruentrup
Due to audio and technical difficulties some of the discussion by Bill Bruentrup was inaudible. Bill
Bruentrup shared the history of his life growing up on the Bruentrup farm and living in
Maplewood.
7. OLD BUSINESS
a. Master Plan for Gladstone Savanna and Gloster Park
i. Natural Resource Coordinator, Ginny Gaynor gave the report and answered questions of
the commission.
ii. Bob Jensen, Vice President, Maplewood Area Historical Society addressed and answered
questions of the commission.
iii. Carolyn Peterson, Maplewood resident and former Park & Recreation Commission
member addressed the commission.
iv. Sandra Dicki, 1742 frank Street, Maplewood, addressed the commission.
Acting Chairperson Currie moved to approve the Master Plan for Gladstone Savanna and Gloster
Park with the idea to make it a historical site in time.
Seconded by Commissioner Aurelius.
Ayes - All
The motion passed.
b. Discussion Only - Update on Process of the Certified Local Government (CLG) Status
i. Building Official, Dave fisher addressed the commission and gave an update on the
process of the certified local government status.
c. Parks ide fire Building, 2001 McMenemy Street - Acting Chairperson Currie
i. Building Official, Dave fisher addressed the commission regarding the closure of the fire
stations, future plans for those buildings and the potential building of the east metro
training building.
8. NEW BUSINESS
a. Draft of the Preservation Plan for Minnesota's Historical Properties 2012-2017
i. Building Official, Dave fisher discussed the draft of the preservation plan for Minnesota's
Historical Properties 2012-2017. No action was needed.
b. December meeting - Commissioner Aurelius
Commissioner Aurelius moved to cancel the HPC meetinq in December.
Seconded by Acting Chairperson Currie.

9. MAPLEWOOD AREA HISTORICAL SOCIETY
a. Bob Jensen, Vice President, Maplewood Historical Society gave an update on the events
and happenings with the Maplewood Historical Society.
10. COMMISSION PRESENTATIONS
None.
11. STAFF PRESENTATIONS
a. Construction over pass (MN DOT) - Dave Fisher
Staff discussed that MN DOT is planning on road construction on the Highway 36 over pass and
wanted input from the city regarding possible historical buildings along Highway 36. The HPC did
not find much historical significance for the Quonset hut building or the bridge over Highway 36.
12. ADJOURNMENT
Acting Chairperson Currie adjourned the meeting at 8:33 p.m.
