1. CALL TO ORDER
A meeting of the Commission was held in the City Hall Council Chambers and was called to order
at 7:00 p.m. by Acting Chairperson Currie.

4. APPROVAL OF MINUTES
During the approval of minutes for September 8, 2011, Commissioner's Aurelius and Creager
commented that they were listed as abstaining from the approval of minutes but that was for the
August 11, 2011, meeting and the record indicated that they were absent from that meeting
therefore they cannot approve minutes that they were not present at the meeting for. The minutes
should be approved as submitted and no correction to the minutes is needed.
Commissioner Aurelius moved to approve the September 8, 2011, minutes as submitted.
Seconded by Acting Chairperson.

6. VISITOR PRESENTATIONS
a. Guest Speaker - Bill Bruentrup
Due to audio and technical difficulties some of the discussion by Bill Bruentrup was inaudible. Bill
Bruentrup shared the history of his life growing up on the Bruentrup farm and living in
Maplewood.
7. OLD BUSINESS
a. Master Plan for Gladstone Savanna and Gloster Park
i. Natural Resource Coordinator, Ginny Gaynor gave the report and answered questions of
the commission.
ii. Bob Jensen, Vice President, Maplewood Historical Society addressed and answered
questions of the commission.
iii. Carolyn Peterson, Maplewood resident and form@lPark & Recreation Commission
member addressed the commission.
iv. Sandra Dicki, 1742 Frank Street, Maplewooditlddt@ssed the commission.
Acting Chairperson Currie moved to approve the Master Plan for Gladstone Savanna and Gloster
Park.
Seconded by Commissioner Aurelius.

a. Draft of the Preservation Plan for Minnesota's Historical Properties 2012-2017
i. Building Official, Dave Fisher discussed the draft of the preservation plan for Minnesota's
Historical Properties 2012-2017. No action was needed.
b. December meeting - Commissioner Aurelius
Commissioner Aurelius moved to cancel the HPC meetinq in December.

9. MAPLEWOOD AREA HISTORICAL SOCIETY
a. Bob Jensen, Vice President, Maplewood Historical Society gave an update on the events
and happenings with the Maplewood Historical Society.
10. COMMISSION PRESENTATIONS
None.
11. STAFF PRESENTATIONS
a. Construction over pass (MN DOT) - Dave Fisher
Staff discussed that MN DOT is planning on road construction on the Highway 36 over pass and
wanted input from the city regarding possible historical buildings along Highway 36. The HPC did
not find much historical significance for the Quonset hut or the bridge over Highway 36.

INTRODUCTION
The Maplewood Heritage Award is an annual award recognizing an individual who has
positively influenced our City's past or strengthened the preservation of Maplewood
history. In 2011 the Heritage Preservation Commission nominated and selected George
Rossbach for the first annual Maplewood Heritage Award for 2010.
DISCUSSION
The Heritage Preservation Commission (HPC) needs to nominate a person for the
annual Maplewood Heritage Award 2011. Listed below are the names that were on the
ballot for 2010:

HPC Demolition Report 2011
January 4, 2012, for the January 12, 2012 HPC Meeting

INTRODUCTION
The Heritage Preservation Commission (HPC) has requested photos of demolitions
buildings or sites at yearend. This request was made by the HPC to help provide a
record of the buildings or sites that were demolished and provide comments of their
historical significance in the city.
DISCUSSION
Listed below are demolished building from 2011 :
1975 County Road D East - Wendy's Restaurant
Frost Avenue Bridge
Highway 36 Railroad Bridge
RECOMMENDATION
Staff recommendations the HPC review, comment and accept the demolition yearend
report for 2011.

INTRODUCTION
The Heritage Preservation Commission (HPC) is submitting their annual report to the city council
for review.
2011 ANNUAL REPORT
Members
The HPC consists of seven members appointed by the city council. Membership terms are for
three years. The current membership is as follows:

Meetinqs
The HPC's regularly scheduled meetings are the second Thursday of every month at 7:00 p.m. In
2011 the HPC held 9 meetings.
Reviews and Accomplishments
1. Amended the HPC Ordinance.
2. Submitted to the Minnesota State Historical Society Office for Certified Local Government
Status.
3. Educated Maplewood citizens by participating in events at the Bruentrup Heritage Farm,
identifying publications about Maplewood's history at the Ramsey County Library and
providing links on the City's website from the State and County Historical Societies.
4. Repaired the Gladstone informational kiosk and sign.
5. Worked on identifying and recognizing historic families.
6. Worked on identifying and recognizing the history of geographic features such as lakes and
site, etc.
7. Recommended George Rossbach for the Maplewood Heritage Award. The Maplewood
Heritage Award is an annual award recognizing an individual who has positively influenced
our city's past or strengthened the preservation of Maplewood history.
8. Had the following guest speakers come to the HPC meetings and give historical
presentation:

4. Preservation Plan for Minnesota's Historical Properties 2012-2017
11. Worked collaboratively with the Maplewood Area Historical Society:
Outside Activities
Several HPC members are also members of the Maplewood Area Historical Society. These HPC
members worked collaboratively on several society events such as:

. Ice Cream Social- Bruentrup Heritage Farm
. Ramsey County Fair
. Johnny Appleseed Days - Bruentrup Heritage Farm
. Halloween Hoedown - Maplewood Community Center

. Quilting Bee - Bruentrup Heritage Farm
. Ramsey County Library - Gladstone Presentations
Conclusion
The Maplewood Heritage Preservation Commission is committed to promoting the use and
conservation of historic properties for the education, inspiration, pleasure and enrichment of the
citizens of this area.
RECOMMENDATION
Approve the 2011 Heritage Preservation Commission annual report and submit to the City Council.

Draft Heritage Preservation Commission 2012 Goals

INTRODUCTION
The Heritage Preservation Commission (HPC) needs to established their goals for 2012. To guide them
in setting these goals, the HPC referred to the Historical Resources Chapter in the 2030
Comprehensive Plan and to the Heritage Preservation Commission Ordinance statement of public
policy and purpose. The following are suggested goals:
Goals
1. Continue all necessary measures for the Certified Local Government (CLG) status by
maintaining a historical site survey and providing all the documentation required to the
Minnesota State Historic Preservation Office.
2. Review at least one project and submit it to the City Council and the Minnesota State Historic
Preservation Office for the National Historical Register.
3. Submit a nomination to the city council for the Maplewood Heritage Award for 2011 and 2012.

4. Continue to identify and recognize historic families.
5. Continue to identify and recognize the history of geographic features such as lakes, etc.
6. Continue to provide and add links to the city website from the Maplewood Area Historical
Society, Minnesota State Historical Society and other public websites.
7. Have a guest speaker from a historical site give historical presentation to the commission.
8. Identify books, articles and media about Maplewood. Work with the Maplewood Library to
provide the books, articles and media to the public.
9. Review photos of demolished buildings throughout the year and make it part of the HPC's
annual report.
10. Continue to promote, collaborate and work with the Maplewood Area Historical Society.
RECOMMENDATION
Approve the Heritage Preservation Commission 2012 goals and submit to the City Council.
